Teeth alignment issues, including gaps between teeth, are a common cosmetic concern. In this article, we address a question often asked by our clients: Can you fix gaps between the teeth without braces, and how can cosmetic dental procedures help?
Can You Fix Gaps Between Your Teeth Without Braces?
It is possible to fix gaps between the teeth without braces. Let us look at the three most common ways of doing so in detail:
Invisalign
Orthodontic treatment remains the most effective way to permanently close the gaps between your teeth. The good news is that you do not necessarily have to wear traditional metal braces for your orthodontic treatment. Invisalign is a modern alternative to braces that is much less noticeable in the mouth and more comfortable to wear.
Invisalign aligners are trays made of colorless transparent plastic that can be removed during meals and when you brush your teeth. This means that wearing Invisalign does not require dietary restrictions or changes in your oral hygiene routine, unlike traditional braces. Additionally, patients report that Invisalign causes less discomfort than braces, since it does not have metal parts that can rub and irritate the soft tissues in your mouth.
Even though fixing gaps between the teeth with Invisalign requires time and discipline and can cause occasional discomfort as the teeth move, we still recommend it. Not only will orthodontic treatment provide permanent cosmetic improvements, as we mentioned before, but it will also improve your oral health and facial symmetry and help prevent improper bite-related TMJ issues.
Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a cosmetic procedure that can typically be completed in 1 to 2 dental visits, with results lasting up to 7 years. During this procedure, your dentist will use resin composite, the same material that is used for dental fillings, to alter the shape or size of your teeth.
Bonding is a relatively conservative method that can be suitable for fixing minor gaps between the teeth and other imperfections, such as stains, chips, or cracks. However, it is unlikely to be recommended for masking multiple large gaps, in which case veneers or an orthodontic treatment can be preferred.
Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are another cosmetic option that can mask gaps between teeth. A dental veneer is a thin porcelain shell that covers the entire front side of a tooth. This method may be more suitable for larger gaps than dental bonding.
However, the process of veneer applications requires alterations to your natural teeth. A portion of the tooth’s enamel is filed down to allow veneers to fit comfortably and look natural. Since teeth can not survive without their enamel, veneers are a permanent solution that requires lifelong commitment. They can last up to 15 years with proper care before having to be replaced with a new set or with dental crowns. Additionally, veneers are typically much more expensive than bonding and can be more expensive than Invisalign if you are opting for a full smile makeover.
Alternatively, a new method called lumineers might be used for fixing small gaps between the teeth. Lumineers are much thinner than traditional veneers, require less tooth preparation, and can be permanently removed in most cases.
